Pattern Utility is a free, open-source 1-bit pattern editor for
OpenFront. Design a pattern, preview how it
looks in-game, and submit it for review — all from one place.
What you can do here
- Draw with Pencil, Circle, Shape, Line, Fill and Shade tools, with a size slider that adapts to each tool.
- Select part of your pattern to cut, copy, paste, shift, rotate or flip it.
- Use the Test Canvas as a scratchpad while you work on the main pattern.
- Preview your pattern against different scale sizes and colours before submitting.
- Import/Export patterns as JSON (or copy the URL) — and when satisfied Submit your pattern.
⚠️ This tool is in beta. I can't guarantee stability, uptime, maintenance or
permanence — but all links are backwards compatible and the code is open source.

Final Testing & In-Game Preview Instructions:
- In the pattern preview tool press the Console button (to copy Dev LocalStorage String)
- Go to https://main.openfront.dev/
- Right click on the page and select "Inspect" /
or press F12
- In the top bar of the Inspector click the "Console" tab
- Directly paste into the console (after the
>) the LocalStorage you copied.
- Open a solo game and see how the pattern looks.
You can test your pattern at any point while drawing, and the basic preview updates live as you work.
Coloring
In Team Modes your primary colour is replaced, so make sure your secondary still stands out.
Conversely, if most of your overall pattern is the secondary colour it may be confusing in team games.
You can test 2 Teams to see Red and Quads to see Orange/Yellow; use your better judgement for the other team colours.
Standards
- Patterns below a minimum quality may be rejected and low effort patterns will be rejected.
- Patterns that are too similar to existing patterns may be rejected.
- Patterns that are too similar to the background or team colours may be rejected.
- Patterns that are too confusing or similar to structures may be rejected.
